National Wireless Independent Dealer Association
TL/DR Summary:
It’s about time someone recognized the independent wireless dealers. We’re doing that.

An open letter to the wireless industry – and the 40,000+ independent wireless sales and repair shops in particular:

MAY is Independent Wireless Retailer Month.

We’re here to recognize and celebrate… YOU!

This past year has been like no other – and that’s an understatement!

When the country, and in fact, the world shut down, businesses had to pivot and learn how to survive and thrive with their workers and staff scattered.

One business segment stood out – far and way above all others, and that’s the wireless communications industry. Consumers and business people rely on their wireless devices and it was these devices that allowed people to stay in touch and business to continue.

As the large corporations made the decision to close their corporate owned stores during the pandemic, it was the independent wireless dealers – sales and repair shops – that stayed open. In fact, at one point, according to Wave 7 Research, less than 23% of Verizon and T-Mobile corporate stores were open, yet almost 3x that number of independents kept going – many with reduced staff. These heroes of the “front lines” made sure businesses of all types kept going.

When phones needed a repair, clients needed new, updated equipment or just additional accessories to meet the added demand, these men, and women – across brands and across the country – stepped up to provide these services. In fact, wireless communications stores were included in the first industries to be given “essential service” status and granted permission to remain open.

You were among the first to “figure out” how to stay open. You not only began using PPE, but many also sold your “extra” to your customers – helping your communities in new ways. You were among the first to add safety equipment to your stores, begin making deliveries and arrange for safe pick-ups.

Quite simply – we were there.

It is in this spirit, that the wireless industry will begin recognizing May as “Independent Wireless Retailer Month.”

NWIDA, the industry’s premier dealer association, and Corporate Dynamics (CDI), America’s top consultants to wireless dealers, are working in concert with governors, legislators, carriers, manufacturers, suppliers, MVNOs and Master Agents to bring recognition for dealers in the month of May. We are planning some great things to celebrate our industry – including the DSS ‘21 virtual conference- which will take place during the entire month.

In the coming weeks, you’ll hear more about Independent Wireless Retailer Month and about the events surrounding it. You’ll see it on various social platforms, in emails and hear about it from your industry contacts, but we invite you to sign up for our email list and we will send you the information directly so you don’t miss a beat. Thanks for reading – we are super excited about May – you will be too.

Regards,
NWIDA - National Wireless Independent Dealer Association
