National Wireless Independent Dealer Association

Way back in September, 2024 we posted about Jon Freier (COO at T-Mobile) starting to close their retail stores (link.)

At that time, Jon was quoted:

Is brick-and-mortar retail dead? Here’s what I think: Yes, the way we’ve known it is dead.

Last week, Phone Arena (link below) posted details from an internal T-Mobile memo where Freier stated:

“Every upgrade and add-a-line transaction whether done in a store, over the phone, from the couch, wherever, will be done exclusively in T-Life as of August 1.”

T-Mobile has been pushing HARD for EVERYONE (including in-store employees) to use the T-Life app – and to show the customer how to “do it yourself.”

Speculation was this was the start of more store closings, and a few days ago, Phone Arena (link below) posted that, yep, the store closures have started.

Per the article, which quotes users on Reddit:

They are shutting down selected COR locations and are offering affected managers and staff “some” severance packages or the option to downgrade to ME roles. – 37OHZZA, Reddit user, May 2026

Of course, this impacts indirect stores too:

I’m from a 3rd party we also are cutting 40% of our doors , this is all of us suffering.
ExpertTop3073, Reddit user, May 2026

In some locations, the company has started slashing headcounts, pointing to an eventual total closure.

These aren’t slow or underperforming outlets,  This is a directed effort to shrink its retail footprint. – No surprise, Freier said this was the goal himself in a corporate blog post
