While AT&T ended support for its 2G network in 2017, and Verizon following suit in 2020, T-Mobile had planned to phase out its 2G network on April 2, but the company decided to delay the shutdown.
That delay ends next month – however, starting next month, T-Mobile is expected to begin withdrawing support for 2G devices.
Reddit users noticed a significant reduction in 2G coverage between July and August. Around the same time, T-Mobile updated its Network Evolution page to notify customers that the capacity and coverage of its 2G network “is expected to change starting as early as September 1, 2024.”
This indicates that T-Mobile has likely started the process of shutting down its 2G network. The company had previously mentioned that some 2G sites would be dismantled ahead of the full network retirement, impacting capacity and coverage.
T-Mobile is waiving SIM fees, device connectivity charges, and related taxes. They might even offer you an affordable phone for free to encourage you to switch from your 2G device.
