Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics declared an “indefinite strike” on Wednesday to pressure South Korea’s largest company to meet their demands for higher pay and improved benefits.
Thousands of members of the National Samsung Electronics Union began a temporary, three-day strike on Monday. However, on Wednesday, the union announced an indefinite strike, accusing management of being unwilling to negotiate. Samsung Electronics stated that there have been no disruptions to production.
“Samsung Electronics will ensure no disruptions occur in the production lines,” a company statement said. “The company remains committed to engaging in good faith negotiations with the union.”
In a statement, the union claimed it has engaged in unspecified disruptions to the company’s production lines to pressure management into negotiations if the strike continues. “We are confident of our victory,” the union stated.
Earlier this year, union members and management held several rounds of talks regarding the union’s demands for higher wages and better working conditions, but no agreement was reached. In June, some union members collectively took their annual leave in a one-day walkout, which observers noted was the first labor strike at Samsung Electronics.
Approximately 30,000 Samsung workers are reportedly affiliated with the National Samsung Electronics Union, the largest union at the company, with others belonging to smaller unions.
