Colorado and Oregon Pass Right to Repair Laws

Repair - Right to Repair - NWIDAOur friends at Repair.org tell us that Governor Polis of Colorado has officially signed the state’s third Right to Repair bill into law, setting a new standard for consumer and independent business repair rights. This marks another major step for Colorado towards comprehensive repair freedoms, following significant wins for powered wheelchairs in 2022 and farm equipment in 2023. Colorado is building a strong track record in this area.

The new law, effective January 1, 2026, bans parts pairing for devices made on or after July 1, 2021. It covers almost all devices with a chip, except game consoles, medical devices, ATVs, and motor vehicles. Manufacturers not in compliance will face fines up to $1,000 per day starting in 2026. With this legislation, Colorado now boasts one of the strongest sets of repair protections in the world.

And – in Oregon, Governor Kotek recently held a formal signing ceremony for the state’s own Right to Repair law, passed earlier in March. The Oregon law applies to cellphones manufactured or first sold in the state as of July 1, 2021 and most other devices as of July 1, 2015. The law does not extend to medical devices, farm equipment, anything that runs on an internal combustion engine, and video game consoles.
