Apple is launching a new feature aimed at simplifying iPhone repairs for users.
With the iOS 18 update, arriving on September 16, Apple is introducing a feature called “Repair Assistant,” as reported by MacRumors. This tool will identify and authenticate genuine iPhone parts, whether new or used, ensuring they work as intended. Previously, replacing iPhone components without Apple’s intervention could lead to the device not recognizing the part or even malfunctioning, according to The Verge. Now, the “Repair Assistant” will calibrate the part, allowing your iPhone to function correctly post-repair.
Apple explained in an April press release that verifying the authenticity of parts, also known as “pairing,” is crucial for maintaining user privacy, security, and device safety. Alongside this, Apple is introducing additional repair-friendly updates, including no longer requiring a device’s serial number for certain repairs, providing a settings section to track a device’s repair history, and implementing an anti-theft feature that blocks repairs using parts from lost or stolen phones.
For years, Apple resisted consumer efforts advocating for the “right to repair,” arguing that access to diagnostic tools and software could jeopardize device safety and increase risks of fraud. However, public pressure has grown. In 2021, President Biden’s executive order encouraged the FTC to limit corporate obstacles to self-repair. In response, Apple launched its “Self Service Repair” program and later supported California’s “Right to Repair Act,” which seeks to prevent barriers to third-party repairs.
This debate dates back to Apple’s founding, with cofounder Steve Wozniak supporting open access to the internal systems, a stance he reaffirmed in 2021, stating, “It’s time to recognize the right to repair more fully.”
