AT&T has disclosed a major hack of customer data affecting nearly all its subscribers over a six-month period in 2022, marking one of the largest breaches in the communications industry.
In a regulatory filing, AT&T revealed that it became aware in April of a claim by a “threat actor” who stated they had illegally accessed and copied call logs. An investigation confirmed unauthorized access on an AT&T workspace hosted on a third-party cloud platform, compromising the data of nearly all its wireless customers, including those of MVNOs using its network. The breach also affected AT&T landline customers who interacted with the impacted mobile numbers.
Bloomberg reported that the third-party platform involved is managed by the cloud company Snowflake.
Hackers got records of customer calls and text interactions from May 1 to October 31, 2022. However, the breach did not include the content of calls or texts, nor did it compromise personal information such as social security numbers and dates of birth.
This is in addition to a number of customers also had data compromised on January 2, 2023.
AT&T, which had about 110 million wireless subscribers at the end of 2022, will start notifying affected customers. The company has implemented additional cybersecurity measures in response to the incident.
The disclosure of the breach was delayed because the US Department of Justice determined in May and June that “a delay in public disclosure was warranted.”
AT&T stated that the incident has not had a material impact on its operations and is not expected to materially affect its financial condition.
In April, AT&T also reported a separate hack that impacted 7.6 million customers and 65.4 million former account holders.
