Apple LOGOwith a h/t to friend of NWIDA – Kyle Wiens of iFixit and Repair.org, today we find out that Apple is planning to extend support for (select) iPhones to outside the Apple internal repair process.

On Apple’s website (link below) it goes into a bit more details and Kyle has summarized:

  • Beginning with select iPhone models this fall, calibration for genuine Apple parts, new or used, will happen on device after the part is installed
  • Future iPhone releases will have support for used biometric sensors
  • Customers and service providers will no longer need to provide a device’s serial number when ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store for repairs not involving replacement of the logic board
  • Apple will also extend its popular Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts in order to deter stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts
  • If a device under repair detects that a supported part was obtained from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted.
  • This fall, Apple will expand Parts and Service History to additionally show whether a part is a new or used genuine Apple part.

Kyle continues:
He notes that “this is announced WAY in advanceas far as 7 months in advance.”

He wonders: ‘Select iPhone models’ this fall? Is this new phones that aren’t out yet?

He notes: (Apple) sees the real threat is aftermarket parts, and they’re taking away a convenient argument / explanation that we had about used parts not working. I think lawmakers will be very receptive to an argument in favor of aftermarket parts.

Announcing this now rather than waiting until it’s ready shows they’re really trying to preempt legislation, most likely Colorado.
