T-Mobile Defends Job Cuts

T-Mobile _ NWIDAAccording to an article on Mobile World Live (link below) T-Mobile doubled down on their promise to add 5,000 new jobs by May 2021 – just as it began laying off more employees.

T-Mobile confirmed jobs were going, arguing in a statement the move was “essential” for it to “remain a fast-moving and competitive growth company” and would result in “additional career opportunities for many”.  Although based on what we know, none of the staff were offered new positions anywhere in the company.

The operator noted that in May they started to hire 5,000 new staff “in multiple departments” (which will be spread over the next 12 months), in retail, customer care, enterprise, network and engineering. Of course, this last round of lay-offs specifically effected retail based employees.

In May, multiple news outlets (including NWIDA) reported the operator planned to end franchise agreements with up to 2,000 dealer-owned retail outlets operating under its Metro by T-Mobile prepaid brand, impacting an estimated 6,000 staff.
