Dish Pre-Launches 2nd Network

Dish logo - NWIDAIt appears Dish is planning to launch a “2nd 5G network” (kind of) – before the first one is completed. Named Boost Infinite, the service is looking to compete with the other major carriers, with an unlimited plan at a “competitive price”.

The service will be nationwide, using the networks of Dish, AT&T and T-Mobile, a Dish spokesperson told Fierce Wireless.

If Dish can provide a device that chooses the strongest signal (like Google Fi), then they could have a winner on their hands. The device could seek out the strongest signal, while Dish builds out their own network – allowing no loss of service to the customer.

NWIDA President, Adam Wolf said:
It’s a strategy that started in the mid-90s when the PCS networks were being built. Sprint PCS was the first to employ it (with their devices seeking the new Sprint PCS network and falling back to AT&T) and, fun fact, it’s a strategy I tried to employ back at Geotek in the late 90s.

The website mentions the power of three 5G networks and shows the U.S. in separate blue, magenta and red colors but doesn’t name the operators behind the networks – but I think we can guess.

Dish confirmed that Boost Infinite is separate from Project Genesis, the 5G service “launched” by Dish Wireless in May.

Dish Network holds an MVNO deal with both AT&T and T-Mobile’s network while it builds-out its own.

A Dish Network representative stated Boost Infinite and Project Genesis subscribers will have access to the greenfield set-up where it’s available and other operators’ networks elsewhere in the US.

“There will be handset financing which will make life more complicated.”

Dish is required to cover 70% of the US population with its 5G network by June 2023.
