Cable operator Cox Communications is ready to join the other cable companies and launch its MVNO – per a report in Mobile World Live (link below.)
Cox told Mobile World Live they plan to roll out 3 pilots: Hampton Roads, Virginia; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Omaha, Nebraska.
When asked which network the MVNO would be on, the representative said “contractual obligations limit the extent we can discuss our MNO partner”.
“What we can say is that our customers will have access to reliable 4G LTE and 5G coverage.”
Where 5G is available, mobile plans include a Pay as you Gig option whereby customers pay for the data they need instead of a one-size-fits-all plan. Cox’ post-paid Internet is required for the plan and data is billed per line in 1GB units at $15 each.
Cox Communications was ready to launch a mobile service in 2021 but T-Mobile sued them about network access. The cable operator had signed with Sprint but when Sprint was acquired, they wanted to switch to Verizon. Instead, they ended up being sued by T-Mobile.
A US court ruling this year opened the door for Cox to pursue an MVNO agreement with Verizon, the operator Comcast and Charter are using for their wireless services.
Cox actually built its own 3G CDMA wireless network in 2010 using 700MHz spectrum bought in 2008 for $30 million, but never turned the network on. They also offered a mobile service through an agreement with Sprint before shutting down the service in 2012.
