As I’m sure you have seen in the news, the Coronavirus has reached epidemic proportions – especially in China. And, especially in the province where much of the manufacturing takes place.
This, coupled with the fact the shutdown occurred right around the time for the Chinese work break for their New Year, has put many items in short supply. And with short supply usually comes higher prices. (It’s supply and demand, folks!) Some are predicting a short-term price increase of as much as 30%
Numerous repair parts wholesalers have issued statements regarding their supply – and most are along the lines of this:
- Production and shipping of parts from China is at or near ZERO.
- Anything in stock now was manufactured before the shutdown. This includes some “minor blemished stock.”
- Buy now – and buy as many as you can – because it’s going to be a while before we can restock.
The estimate on when production will come back on line seems to change almost daily – and the new date being bandied about is around April 8th or so. That’s when production will start – the wholesalers and suppliers in the US won’t get product for a few weeks after that!
As frustrating as this can be for our industry, we of course keep in mind the people in China suffering from this epidemic. Without question, their lives are the most important and we hope for a speedy end to the illness and for complete recovery for all those impacted.
